Arthroscopic Meniscus Repair

Arthroscopic Meniscus Repair

Meniscus is cushion like structure present inside the knee joint. Meniscus acts as a shock absorber and helps in uniformly distributing load across the joint. It is an important structure, if absent or damaged can lead to early degeneration of joint. At My Ortho Centre our goal is to preserve meniscus and its function. Depending upon the type, location and quality of the torn fragment, and the age of the patient, repairing the meniscus is our priority.

There are various techniques with which we repair the torn meniscus. All the procedures are done through minimal invasive and pin hole technique (Arthroscopic technique).
Recovery time for these surgeries varies, non weight bearing movement starts immediately after surgery followed by partial to full weight bearing over next 6- 8 weeks. Dr Mohit Madan is one of very few arthroscopic surgeons performing arthroscopic meniscus repair quite frequently with outstanding results.

FAQs: Arthroscopic Meniscus Repair

What is Arthroscopic Meniscus Repair?

Arthroscopic Meniscus Repair is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to repair a torn meniscus in the knee. It involves using small incisions and a camera (arthroscope) to visualize and fix the damaged tissue.

When is Arthroscopic Meniscus Repair recommended?

This procedure is typically recommended when a meniscus tear is significant and cannot heal on its own, especially in younger patients, athletes, or those with an active lifestyle who want to regain full function of their knee.

How long does the surgery take?

The procedure usually takes about 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the severity of the tear and the complexity of the repair.

What is the recovery time after Arthroscopic Meniscus Repair?

Recovery time can vary, but most patients can expect to return to light activities within 4 to 6 weeks. Full recovery, including a return to sports or strenuous activities, may take 3 to 6 months, depending on rehabilitation progress.

Will I need physical therapy after the surgery?

Yes, physical therapy is a crucial part of the recovery process after meniscus repair. It helps strengthen the knee, restore range of motion, and speed up healing.

What are the risks of Arthroscopic Meniscus Repair?

While generally safe, risks include infection, blood clots, stiffness, and failure of the meniscus to heal properly, which may require additional surgery. However, these risks are rare when the procedure is performed by an experienced orthopedic surgeon.

How do I know if I need Arthroscopic Meniscus Repair or another treatment?

The decision depends on the location and severity of the tear, your age, activity level, and overall health. At My Ortho Centre, our orthopedic specialists will perform a detailed evaluation and recommend the best treatment option for your condition.

Will I experience pain after the surgery?

Some pain and swelling are normal after the procedure. Your doctor will prescribe pain management medication, and cold therapy may be used to reduce swelling. Most patients find that pain decreases significantly within a few days.

Can I walk immediately after surgery?

Walking is generally allowed shortly after surgery, but it may require the use of crutches or a knee brace for the first few weeks to protect the repaired meniscus and promote healing.

Is Arthroscopic Meniscus Repair covered by insurance?

Most insurance providers cover this procedure, but it’s important to check with your insurance company and verify the coverage details before the surgery.

Disease, trauma or stressful activity can damage any structure of your elbow joint causing pain and disability. Some of the common causes of elbow pain are:

Post Traumatic Arthritis
Old trauma, either a fracture or dislocation of the elbow region can lead to post traumatic arthritis. In post traumatic arthritis the cartilage which is a tough smooth cushion to your elbow joint is damaged or worn out.
In case of injury where proper healing of bones or ligaments does not happen, undue stress develops in the joint. These undue stress lead to premature progressive wearing of the cartilage. Progressive damage to cartilage causes pain while attempting movement of the arm like combing hair, picking objects or driving etc.

Rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto immune disease where synovium(a covering producing joint fluid)overgrows and become inflamed. Inflamed synovium slowly eats away whole of the joint causing episodes of severe pain and swelling. If diagnosed early, it can be treated with medication and life style modifications. In others, where the joint suffered irreparable damage surgery provides pain relief and movement. With the advancement in surgical techniques and implants elbow replacement is a successful procedure providing pain free and mobile joint.
There are various other causes for elbow pain which needs proper evaluation and treatment.
